Church of the Black Rose

Event Confirmation for the Royale Giant Social Club Saturday Blues Jam & Music Service

We will be gathering on Saturday April 7th at the Art Church of West Philadelphia to celebrate the life, legacy and the 103rd birthday of the Philadelphia native rose, Billie Holiday – our patron Saint of Solemn and Obsessive Love.

Date: Saturday, April 7th, 2018 at 11am

  • 10:30 Doors Open

The Art Church of West Philadelphia is a community space that provides an interesting and casual space. The Social Club hosts our bi-weekly music fellowship meetings there.

Parking
The church is in a residential neighborhood so the only parking available is street parking, but finding a spot didn’t appear to be super challenging.

Public Transportation
This part of West Philly is serviced by a light rail (or street car) line in addition to the regular SEPTA line. Below are the stops that are listed as being closest to the church, but I would check the SEPTA website for any relevant schedule information.

  • MFL Line – 52nd Street Station
  • Media/Elwyn Line – 49th Street Station of the
  • #34 Light Rail – Baltimore Av & Broomhall Street Stop

What to Bring: Acoustic Instrument of Choice
My preference is to limit these bi-weekly jam sessions to acoustic, percussive and wind or brass instruments only – no electric or amplified set-ups. The aim is to keep the focus on the human aspect of the jam as well as to minimize the set-up and breakdown time.

All types of non-electric instruments are welcome. We welcome a diversity of sound and tone.

What to Practice or Listen To
We’ll have prints of the lyrics and chord progressions of the following songs. I’ve also included links to YouTube videos you can check out to hear Billie’s original version (as well as some instructional videos – in case you want to try out the chord progressions). Also feel free to bring Billie songs that you want to share with the group as well.

  1. All of Me
  2. The Very Thought of You
  3. Easy Living
  4. Strange Fruit
  5. Summertime
  6. I Get A Kick Out of You
  7. Billie’s Blues

My apologies for the page, but I wanted to make sure I covered all the bases. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Thanks again for your jamming with us, Its the fellowship of the collective that makes it an interesting and rich experience.  I look forward to seeing you there.
